‘Expressie is belangrijker dan schoonheid’. Het werk van Sonya Wilson vindt haar oorsprong in zelf expressie waarbij de kijker wordt uitgedaagd zijn of haar eigen invulling te geven. ‘Kijk er naar met een frisse blik. Ik weet wat mijn betekenis is, maar wat is die van jou?’ Het hier getoonde werk valt binnen het project ‘Parallel Lives’. Waar gaan we heen en waar komen we vandaan?
Sonya creëert haar werk vanuit emoties en gedachten, niet alleen van haar zelf, maar ook van mensen om haar heen in de multiculturele stad Amsterdam. ‘We delen de beperkte ruimte met elkaar, maar houden afstand, ook al hebben we dezelfde beslommeringen.’
Sonya gebruikt mixed media met print-technieken, inkt, collage, en acrylverf op doek of papier. Haar werk wordt gekenmerkt
door felle keuren en patronen in alle richtingen, laag over laag.

Self expression is the source of Sonya Wilson’s art, and she challenges the audience to find their own interpretation of her work. ‘Look at it with fresh eyes. I know what my meaning is, but what’s yours?’
The work shown here is part of the ongoing project ‘Parallel Lives’. ‘Where do we come from, where are we headed?’ Sonya’s work is inspired by life in the multi-cultural city of Amsterdam. ‘We share the same space with each other on a daily basis, but yet we keep our distance. We face the same issues in life –but do we really share?’
Sonya uses mixed media techniques, Indian ink, collage, and acrylic paint on canvas or paper. Her work is characterized by bright colors and patterns, layer over layer.
