The Rest is Noise: Sugai Ken + Yasuo Sugibayashi
De Australische/Amsterdamse Izabel Caligiore en haar label Lullabies For Insomniacs maken al jaren grote indruk in de internationale elektronische underground. Vanavond presenteert ze twee Japanse artiesten uit haar stal: elektronicapionier Yasuo Sugibayashi en Sugai Ken, maker van de allereerste release op het label.
Sugai Ken is een componist en muzikant uit Kanagawa, Japan. Hij bewerkt geluidsopnames van zijn dagelijkse leven en traditionele muziek uit Japan tot duistere, claustrofobische klankcollages die je meenemen naar een geheel nieuwe, innerlijke wereld. Na bijna tien jaar muziek te hebben gemaakt voor een Japans publiek, vormde zijn vijfde plaat On The Quakefish op Lullabies For Insomniacs zijn internationale doorbraak, waarna hij ook op het toonaangevende RVNG tekende.
Yasuo Sugibayashi is één van de vroegste pioniers van de Japanse elektronische muziek. In de periode 1980-1982 bracht hij een LP en twee 7inch-singles uit op zijn label Mimic Records. Inmiddels genieten die een cultstatus onder verzamelaars van obscure elektronica en ze worden voor forse bedragen verhandeld. Lullabies For Insomniacs maakte zijn baanbrekende muziek breder toegankelijk met het compilatiealbum The Mask of the Imperial Family. Yasuo Sugibayashi speelt deze avond een exclusieve set samen met Sugai Ken.
Lullabies For Insomniacs begon in 2013 als een nachtelijk radioprogramma op het radiostation PBS in Melbourne. Nog steeds heeft Caligiore een voorliefde voor dromerige elektronica. De Soundcloud-mix-serie die Caligiori cureert wordt gretig beluisterd door vele duizenden luisteraars. De 11 releases die ze uitbracht tonen een uitstekend oor voor bijzondere onbekende muziek.

Groundbreaking Japanese electronica from Amsterdam-based label
The Australian/Amsterdam Izabel Caligiore and her label Lullabies For Insomniacs have been leaving great impressions in the international electronic underground scene for years. Tonight she will present two Japanese artists from her stable: electronica pioneer Yasuo Sugibayashi and Sugai Ken, maker of their very first release on the label.
Sugai Ken is a composer and musician from Kanagawa, Japan. He transforms recordings from his daily life and traditional music from Japan to dark, claustrophobic sound collages that take you to a whole new, inner world. After almost ten years of making music for a Japanese audience, his fifth record On The Quakefish on Lullabies For Insomniacs meant his international breakthrough. Wherafter he also signed to leading label RVNG.
Yasuo Sugibayashi is one of the earlier pioneers of the Japanese electronic music. From 1980-1982 he released vinyl and two 7” singles on his label Mimic Records. In the meantime these have become cult classics amongst collectors of obscure electronica and they are still being sold for bold prices. Lullabies For Insomniacs made his groundbreaking music more accessible through the compilation album The Mask of the Imperial Family. This evening Yasuo Sugibayashi will team up with Sugai Ken to play an exceptional set.
Lullabies For Insomniacs originated in 2013 as a late night radioprogram on radiostation PBS in Melbourne. Caligiore’s heart still goes out to dreamy electronica. Her Soundcloud-mix-series is beloved by thousands of listeners. She has an ear for great unheard tunes, which is well portrayed in her 11 releases.
